Social Anxiety Disorder is diagnosed when someone experiences excessive fear of embarrassment and judgment in social or performance situations. It can result in missing work and social isolation. This disorder is relatively common, affecting 12.1% of U.S. adults at some time in their lives, per the National Institute for Mental Health (NIMH.)

Social Anxiety Disorder, which is also referred to as social phobia, can often be effectively addressed through counseling and certain medications such as anti-depressants. Like the other anxiety disorders, Social Anxiety Disorder can be treated by psychotherapy, medication, or a combination of both. Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) have been found to be particularly effective. With proper treatment it is possible to overcome the anxiety triggered by public speaking and other stress provoking social situations.
